The difference between cacti and succulents

The difference between cacti and succulents is a much-discussed topic among plant lovers. Although they are often confused due to their similar appearance and drought-resistant properties, there are important differences in care, growth habit, and appearance.

At The Green Bottle Garden, we offer a beautiful collection of indoor plant arrangements with cacti and succulents, specially curated for indoors. Here, you'll learn everything about caring for succulents and cacti, and how best to maintain these special plants in your home.

What makes a cactus a cactus?

Cacti belong to the Cactaceae family and are originally from arid regions of North and South America. Their unique feature is the areoles — small circular areas from which spines, flowers, or new branches grow. These spines protect the cactus from predation and help limit water loss, even in bright sunlight.

Many cacti bloom spectacularly with large, colorful flowers, even as houseplants. Thanks to their ease of care and unique appearance, they are perfectly suited as indoor cacti.

Succulents: masters of water storage

Succulents store water in their thick leaves, stems, or roots. This makes them excellent at withstanding dry indoor conditions. Popular species such as Echeveria, Aloe Vera, and Sedum have smooth or pointed leaves in a variety of shapes and colors.

Due to their versatility and elegant appearance, succulents are ideal as indoor plants, for example, as part of a houseplant arrangement or as a decorative accent on a table or windowsill. Whether you call them fat plants or succulents, they always bring peace, color, and natural harmony into your home.

Caring for succulents and cacti: light, water, and soil

Although both cacti and succulents are drought-loving plants, each has its own care needs. With the right spot and attention, they will grow beautifully, even indoors.

Light

  • Indoor cactus care: place them in a bright spot, such as a south-facing windowsill. They love bright sunlight, but indirect light can also keep them healthy.
  • Indoor succulent care: succulents do well in bright light, but direct midday sun can sometimes scorch their delicate leaves.

Water

  • Cacti: only water when the potting soil is completely dry. Too much water can cause root rot.
  • Succulents: occasional watering is sufficient, as long as excess water can drain away properly.

Soil
Always use well-draining potting soil, specially formulated for succulents and cacti. This prevents root rot and keeps your houseplant arrangements healthy.

Cacti and succulents in summer

In summer, cacti and succulents can thrive outdoors, for example, on a balcony or terrace. However, it is important to bring them indoors again in autumn and winter to keep them stable and healthy.

Many cacti and succulents are grown in greenhouses in the Netherlands, so they are not directly accustomed to bright sun. Therefore, gradually acclimatize your plant to sunlight: start with morning sun, then a few hours of evening sun. This way, the plant can slowly get used to full sun without leaf burn.

A tip from The Green Bottle Garden's botanists: not every species can tolerate full sun. Feel free to send a photo of your plant, and our botanists will be happy to advise you if it's possible.

Indoors or outdoors?

A cactus or succulent is a real plant and can certainly be kept outdoors, but at The Green Bottle Garden, we primarily see them as houseplants. They require little water, are almost maintenance-free, and thrive indoors.

Which one suits you?

  • Indoor cactus: tough and robust — perfect for bright, sunny spots.
  • Indoor succulents: versatile in colors and shapes — suitable for almost any bright spot in the house.
