Een flessentuin is een miniatuurlandschap van planten in een glazen fles of vaas. De fles kan volledig gesloten zijn, dan is het een ecosysteem, of een opening hebben, dan noem je het een terrarium.

Terrariums
De terrariums van The Green Bottle Garden hebben een opening aan de achterkant of bovenkant. Dit zorgt voor een optimale luchtcirculatie en voorkomt dat overtollig vocht zich ophoopt, waardoor de planten gezond blijven. Dit maakt de verzorging eenvoudiger en voorkomt schimmelvorming. Dankzij deze open structuur kunnen de planten ademen en behouden ze hun natuurlijke groeicyclus.

Ecosystemen
De ecosystemen van The Green Bottle Garden zijn volledig afgesloten met een kurk. Voordat de kurk op het glas gaat, verdampt overtollig water, zodat de planten precies de juiste hoeveelheid vocht krijgen. Zodra de fles is afgesloten, ontstaat een zelfvoorzienend ecosysteem: water verdampt, condenseert tegen het glas en druppelt terug in de grond, terwijl de planten CO₂ omzetten in zuurstof. Flessentuin verzorging: hoe werkt het?

Hoewel de planten in een flessentuintje over het algemeen onderhoudsvriendelijk zijn, zijn er toch een paar belangrijke dingen om in gedachten te houden. Met de juiste verzorging en een paar slimme tips gaat jouw mini-tuintje jarenlang mee!

Verzorgingstips voor een open fles (terrarium):

🌿 Plaatsing: Zet jouw tuintje op een plek met indirect licht. Vermijd direct zonlicht, dit kan de temperatuur in de fles te veel laten stijgen en de planten verbranden.

🌿 Water geven: Omdat onze flessen open zijn, hebben ze af en toe een beetje water nodig. Controleer de grond en geef water als de bovenste laag droog aanvoelt. Geef niet meer dan een half kopje water om wortelrot te voorkomen.

🌿 Luchtvochtigheid: Doordat het planten terrarium open is, blijft de luchtcirculatie optimaal en is er minder kans op overmatige condensvorming.

🌿 Temperatuur: Elke plant heeft zijn eigen ideale temperatuur. Controleer daarom altijd wat jouw plant nodig heeft. De meeste tropische planten in een flessentuin voelen zich het prettigst bij een stabiele kamertemperatuur tussen de 18 en 24°C. Vermijd plekken met tocht of extreme temperatuurschommelingen, zoals bij een verwarming of open raam.

🌱 Temperatuur: Elke plant heeft zijn eigen ideale temperatuur. Controleer daarom altijd wat jouw plant nodig heeft. De meeste tropische planten in een afgesloten glazen vaas voelen zich het prettigst bij een stabiele kamertemperatuur tussen de 18 en 24°C. Vermijd plekken met tocht of extreme temperatuurschommelingen, zoals bij een verwarming of open raam.

🌱 Dode bladeren: Dode bladeren voeden het ecosysteem en dragen bij aan een gezonde balans. Vind je ze niet mooi? Je kunt ze voorzichtig verwijderen, maar dit verstoort het evenwicht. Af en toe een blad weghalen kan geen kwaad, maar hoe vaker je dit doet, hoe groter de kans dat het ecosysteem uit balans raakt.

Welke planten zijn geschikt voor het maken van een flessentuin?

Planten voor een gesloten flessentuin (ecosysteem)
Niet alle planten zijn geschikt voor een gesloten flessentuin. Kies soorten die goed gedijen in een vochtige, stabiele omgeving, zoals tropische planten. Let erop dat ze niet te snel groeien, anders raken ze klem in de fles. Geschikte planten zijn onder andere Fittonia, Calathea, Maranta, Philodendron en Chamaedorea. Deze soorten houden van een hoge luchtvochtigheid en groeien langzaam, waardoor ze perfect zijn voor een gesloten ecosysteem. Ook varens, mossen en kleine tropische planten doen het goed in deze groene mini-jungles.

In een open terrarium is er meer luchtcirculatie, waardoor je een bredere selectie planten kunt gebruiken. Hou er wel rekening mee dat sommige planten snel groeien. What is a terrarium ecosystem?

A terrarium ecosystem is a miniature world in a closed glass vase or sphere, in which plants keep themselves alive. This happens through a natural cycle process:

1. Water evaporates from the ground and condenses on the glass.
2. The condensation droplets fall back as a kind of rain, keeping the plants continuously hydrated.
3. Plants convert CO₂ into oxygen, which keeps them alive.

This means that a plant ecosystem is completely self-sustaining, just like in nature! With the right balance and care, a plant ecosystem in glass can last for decades.

How often should you water a plant ecosystem?

You no longer need to water the Terrarium Ecosystems. When you purchase a plant ecosystem, the correct amount of water has already been added. There is a date on the enclosed card - until then, leave the ecosystem open. This allows excess moisture to evaporate and prevents root rot. Once the specified date has been reached, close the bottle with the cork. From that moment on, the ecosystem works completely independently!

I bought an ecosystem, what now?

1. Place your terrarium ecosystem in a bright spot , but not in direct sunlight.
2. Do not close the bottle until the indicated date to maintain the correct moisture balance.
3. No watering – the system takes care of itself!
4. Turn the bottle a quarter turn every month so that all plants get the same amount of light.

Is a terrarium ecosystem really maintenance free?

Yes! A closed ecosystem does not need water or fertilizer. The plants feed themselves through photosynthesis, converting light into energy and CO₂ into oxygen. They also get nutrients from the decomposition of organic matter in the soil. All you have to do is turn the bottle occasionally. This ensures that the plants grow evenly and that all sides get enough light. Otherwise, you can just sit back and enjoy your ecosystem in glass!

The Sansevieria, also known as Mother-in-law’s Tongue, is almost legendary for its ability to survive in almost any environment. Whether you have a sunny windowsill or a pitch-black corner, this plant will continue to grow. But what makes this plant truly special is its air-purifying ability. NASA research has shown that the Sansevieria filters out harmful substances such as formaldehyde and benzene, making it an ideal choice for bedrooms or any space where fresh air is desired.

Care tip

- Place the Sansevieria in a well-draining pot, so that excess water can easily drain away. Roots that are too wet can cause root rot.

- Water it only occasionally; this plant likes dry conditions. In winter you can even wait a month between waterings.

Extra fact: The Sansevieria gives off oxygen at night, instead of during the day like most plants. Ideal for the bedroom!

But what makes the Calathea really special is its rhythmic movement: the leaves close at night and open again in the morning, a phenomenon called 'nyctinasty'.

- The Calathea likes moist soil, but make sure it doesn't get too wet. Check the moisture regularly, by sticking a finger in the soil.

- This plant benefits from high humidity. For example, place it in the bathroom or use a humidifier. This helps prevent brown edges on the leaves.

Humidity Solution Calathea: If you notice that the humidity in your home is too low, you can lightly mist the leaves of the Calathea with water daily. Adding a bowl of water with pebbles under the pot also helps to increase the humidity around the plant.

#3. Aglaonema: strong, stylish and colourful

The Aglaonema, also known as the Chinese Evergreen, is one of the strongest plants for dark spaces. This plant is known for its beautiful, variegated leaves that retain their color even in low-light conditions. Because the Aglaonema grows slowly, it is also a plant that does not require much maintenance. Perfect for people who do not want to spend too much time on plant care.

Care tip:
- Place the Aglaonema in an indirect light spot, such as a window that does not receive direct sunlight. Direct sunlight can damage the leaves.

- This plant does not need much water; in fact, it is better to let the soil dry out slightly between waterings.

The perfect location for your plant:

Place your Anthurium in a spot with lots of indirect light. Be careful, direct sunlight can burn the leaves. Keep the plant in a warm environment, preferably between 20-25°C. Avoid temperatures below 16°C.

Watering your Anthurium:

Water the plant regularly, but make sure the soil remains slightly moist and not soaked. Water less often in winter. Let the top layer of the potting soil (about 2-3 cm) dry before watering again. Preferably use rainwater or distilled water to prevent limescale deposits.

Did you know that you can also grow your Anthurium in water, without soil? All you need is a vase or glass jar with enough space for the roots. Make sure to change the water every two to three weeks. If you notice that the water is getting cloudy or dirty, it is better to change it immediately to keep the roots healthy and provide them with enough oxygen.

Nutrition tips:

Give the Anthurium liquid plant food once a month, diluted to half strength, if you want extra certainty about growth and want to see more flowers. This is especially recommended during the growing season (spring and summer), but it is optional - your plant can also thrive without extra nutrition.

 

The best humidity for your plant:

Anthuriums like high humidity (60-80%). You can increase the humidity by using a humidifier or spraying the plant regularly with water.

Maintenance:

Remove dead or yellowed leaves regularly to keep the plant healthy. As the plant grows large, it may need some support. Use a plant stake to keep the stems upright.

Troubleshooting:

Brown leaves can indicate too much direct sunlight or too low humidity.

Yellow leaves can indicate overwatering or a lack of nutrients.
