The biggest mistake? Overwatering. Despite a cactus's appearance as a true survivor, it can rot in no time if the soil remains constantly wet. A cactus stores water in its stem, allowing it to go for long periods without water. If you water too often, you're essentially suffocating the roots.

In addition, cacti often don't get enough light at home. Cacti are sun worshippers: in the wild, they grow in dry and warm areas where the sun shines for many hours a day.

Can a cactus tolerate cold and darkness?
