Colleague farewell gift: 6 original ideas to give someone a proper send-off

A colleague leaving after years, retiring, or taking on a new challenge: it's a moment filled with mixed emotions. Happy for them, but also a little melancholic because you'll miss a great colleague. A good farewell gift encapsulates that feeling — it's a token of appreciation that will last long after the last workday. In this article, you'll find concrete inspiration for a farewell gift for a colleague.

What should you consider when choosing a farewell gift for a colleague?

A good farewell gift doesn't have to be expensive, but it should be thoughtful. A few rules of thumb:

1. Choose something that lasts. Flowers are beautiful, but they wilt within a week. A gift that lasts longer will remind your colleague of the team for months to come.
2. Consider their new situation. Is your colleague moving to a smaller office, working from home, or retiring? Keep that in mind when choosing the size and style.
3. Add a personal touch. A card with personal messages from the entire team, or a gift with a small detail that relates to the colleague, makes the gift that little bit more special.
4. Involve the entire team. A collective gift, possibly supplemented with individual cards, often feels more valuable than separate small presents.

Finally

A farewell gift for a colleague doesn't have to be grand — it's the gesture that counts. A plant or ecosystem that continues to grow is a beautiful, lasting way to show that the time spent together was appreciated. Combine it with a personal card from the team and you have a farewell gift that will be remembered for a long time.
